Lab Philosophy
The Kruglyak Lab is committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment in which individuals from all backgrounds can thrive in their scientific research and personal development. We actively recruit, support, and value students, postdocs, and staff members with diverse perspectives and lived experiences, working to close representation gaps in genetics, genomics, and computational biology. Our lab actively encourages participation in outreach and activities aimed at enhancing diversity and inclusion.
We prioritize a collaborative, positive atmosphere, in which lab members are encouraged to help one another, share ideas, and offer critical feedback, regardless of career stage. Mentorship is a cornerstone of the lab, with new members receiving guidance from more experienced colleagues which addresses both scientific and career goals. Many projects benefit from teams and organizational structures that incorporate all levels of laboratory experience in their execution. All voices are equally valued.
We support lab members in their professional development through opportunities such as reviewing papers, attending scientific meetings, and participating in writing grant applications. Our lab culture embraces flexibility in career choices, including paths outside academia, such as industry, science policy, scientific writing, and non-science careers.
We are committed to creating a safe and healthy lab environment. We communicate clearly and provide space for discussion on how to treat each other with respect. We consider the societal and ethical implications of our research, and we recognize our duty as scientists to conduct and present our research for the benefit of society as a whole.
This statement is a living document, collaboratively refined by all lab members to ensure that we remain receptive to constructive criticism and adaptable to the evolving needs of our community.
